REPORT FROM ISAS 10/30/91 L. Acton We are winding down a really exciting 10 days. It began a week ago last Sunday when hordes of visitors began showing up for the first post-launch Yohkoh Science Meeting. The data analysis center in ISAS building D 4th floor was a beehive of activity as we "locals" had the pleasure of introducing our visiting colleagues to the ever expanding Yohkoh data store. Just as that meeting was being brought to a successful conclusion data appeared from the X1 (actually M9.5 I'm told--picky, picky, picky) flare of 10/24/91 22:30 UT. Yesterday we held the first of what is intended to be weekly informal science discussions here at ISAS within the resident team. Good results are beginning to appear from all of the Yohkoh instruments. The HXT team has the toughest job, to complete and proof test the software for creating hard x-ray images, but the data are there and soon this hurdle, too, will be cleared. One of the truly wonderful developments this past week is that John Mariska brought a copy of MicroEMACS, a Unix screen editor that emulates EDT. It works like a champ. Goodby vi!!!!!!!! The Yohkoh Science Committee + observers met last week twice and reached several important agreements on presentations and publications. One that is especially important at this time concerns the release of SXT images for public information purposes. It was agreed that any single SXT image may be released for public information purposes. Its use should include the following credit, or something equivalent, "This image was acquired by the Soft X-ray Telescope on the Yohkoh solar research spacecraft of the Japanese Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. The Soft X-ray Telescope experiment is a Japan/U.S. collaboration involving the National Astronomical Observtory of Japan, the University of Tokyo, and the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory. The U.S. work is supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration." It was also agreed to submit an early paper on SXT results to SCIENCE magazine as soon as possible. This will be followed by a special issue of Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan in about 6 months with a set of early-results papers from the Yohkoh team. An electronic Yohkoh Team Bulletin Board is to be established for all Yohkoh researchers to post and update science topics describing their research plans. Initially, the editors of the TBB will be Uchida and Acton. Topic submittal will be coordinated by the Yohkoh Data Use Coordinators (Fludra, Watanabe, Tsuneta, Strong, Kosugi, Yoshimori). We also plan to establish a Yohkoh "Newsletter" bulletin board to aid flow of information to and from the outside scientific community. All of this work will take a bit of time but there is an excellent spirit of cooperation and I have every confidence that the Yohkoh mission will be both enjoyable and scientifically productive.
