SXT OPERATIONS STATUS REPORT FOR WEEK ENDING 15 FEB 1992 -------------------------------------------------------- OPERATIONS ---------- SXT operations went very smoothly over this last week with no SEU's to disrupt our observing schedule. However Hugh Hudson and Nariaki Nitta have been attending all the real time contacts to check the instrument status and speed any necessary recovery. They have shown exceptional devotion to this duty as the KSC passes have been generally from about midnight through the early hours of the morning. The BCS did suffer another SEU on Friday and was unable to recover until Sunday morning. The KSC pass schedule has been reduced by "HITENS" operational training and two days of actual operations. These operations have only left us with two passes on 14 and 15 February 1992. The additional DSN passes that we obtained last week helped reduced the potential data gaps. Owing to a traffic accident Sawa-san was unable to be SSOC this week with Greg Slater and so Suga-san and Kosugi-san filled in on various days. Solarnet and Sirius problems were reported at the operations meeting on Monday and seem to have been corrected to the extent that we can reformat data again. SXT operation difficulties were extensively discussed at this meeting. Some further mods to the SXT-J software were proposed and apparently have been sucessfully implimented by Tsuneta-san. Further improvements will be made in March. Tsuneta-san also indicated that he is keeping a detailed log of exceptional errors like the one that happened the previous week but will not be able to supply Lockheed with a history of every SEU problem. Hugh Hudson and Nariaki Nitta have complied a list of SEU times and recovery procedures for Lockheed based on the Toban pass sheets. We also heard at the meeting a detailed description by Ohki-san of the existing HXS spectral analysis software available. The software is available on a standard GUEST account on one of the FLARE computers and can give lightcurves and spectral fits for any event upto January 1992. The latest data and software improvements are continuously being added. SCIENCE PROGRESS ---------------- As reformatting has only just begun again after the Solarnet problems there has been a limited number of recent data sets available to evaluate. A spectacular and dynamic flare was observed by SXT at 1900 UT on 12 February 1992 but there does not seem to be any supporting data from BCS. The week was dominated by a science meeting at Mitaka where a large number of recent results from Yohkoh were given. Hugh Hudson, Nariaki Nitta, Greg Slater, Dick Canfield, and Keith Strong attended representing the US SXT team. Hudson, Canfield and Strong gave presentations. There was an impressive array of young and talented Japanese students who gave progress reports on their research, primarily for their master's thesis. Particularly interesting results on temperature analysis from SXT was given by Hara-san and on a statistical study of loop brightenings given by Shimizu-san. New results from WBS and HXT added a new dimension to Yohkoh scientific discussion and illustrated the great scientific potential of this mission. It was a very productive and interesting meeting which made it possible to identify several new areas for collaborative research between the various institutes and instrument teams represented there. The influx of BCS team members from NRL, RAL and MSSL have led to some stimulating scientific discussions at ISAS and led to the indentification of several events where combinations of BCS, SXT, and magnetograms may be decisive in sorting out the dynamics of the impulsive phase. A science topic will be submitted to the team bullatin board shortly and this study may be proposed to Professor Uchida as a potential PASJ letter. PERSONNEL --------- With the influx of the BCS team members the facilities at ISAS Bldg D have been fairly strained with shortages of workstations, CPU time and work area. We have identified a potential shortfall of SXT personnel at ISAS for periods in March when Nariaki Nitta, Hugh Hudson, Dick Canfield, Greg Slater and Keith Strong return to their respective home Labs at various times during the month. Loren Acton arrives at ISAS mid-march. A detailed schedule of our comings and goings will be added to the TeamBB so we can better identify such shortfalls and move quickly to fill them.
