SXT Status Report 9 - 15 January 1995 (Week 2) --- 16 January 1995 Nariaki Nitta SUMMARY We successfully carried out a campaign to observe X-ray bright points in coordination with Kitt Peak, taking advantage of the absence of bright active regions. Karen Harvey organized the campaign and Mees Observatory also participated but no Big Bear because of the storms that hit Southern California. Solar activity seems to be picking up, thanks to the appearance of AR 7827. A nice PR video was produced on the occasion of Dan Goldin's visit to Japan. SOLAR ACTIVITY The week of 9 January started with very low solar activity (nearly GOES A1), active region AR 7823 being the only region that had spots. This region consisted of several bright loops but they were never active. As another region AR 7827 rotated on to the east limb, the GOES background level started increasing to about A6, with several B class flares. Many X-ray bright points (XBPs) were seen on the disk. In coordination with Kitt Peak, SXT was operating in a special mode for 2-3 passes a day to observe XBPs in the 7.8' (EW) x 2.6' (NS) field of view. We basically tracked an area around N20. A large fraction of the XBPs we observed were faint ones, but one of the brighter ones flared up on 9 January, accompanied by a jet. OPERATIONS There were no errors and problems this week and operations went very smoothly. VISITORS Dan Goldin visited Japan and met with key ISAS personnel at the Ministry of Education (Monbusho). Jim Lemen and Greg Slater worked very hard to produce a Yohkoh video which Ogawara san handed Goldin at Monbusho. The quality of the video seems to be high. SCIENCE No Yohkoh seminar was held because neither Shibata san nor Hugh Hudson was available. Two graduate students (Yoshimura san and Kubo san) are working day and night to complete their master's theses. Yohkoh abstracts were prepared for submission to the ASJ spring meeting (the deadline was 10 January). PERSONNEL No change in the personnel of the US SXT team. Tohbans for Week 2 SSOC: A.
