SXT Status Report 29 Jan. - 4 Feb. 1995 (Week 5) --------- James R. Lemen 4-Feb-1995 SUMMARY Solar activity increased this week. Yohkoh was able to observe some of the over 20 C flares that were observed this week. An observing campaign with NSO (Sac Peak and Kitt Peak) and Mees was conducted this week. The campaign has been organized by Roberto Falciani and Gino Smaldone and its aim is to observe Ellerman bombs, micro flares, bright points and other faint features characteristic of the declining solar cycle. The campaign will continue until 11 Feb 1995. So far, we have been tracking AR 7834 consistently. SOLAR ACTIVITY The solar activity that began to rise last week continued with significant flaring activity from two active regions: AR 7832 near the west limb and AR 7834 which was near the east limb at the beginning of the week. There were over 20 C flares and 3 M flares, one for which there was reported a Type-II burst. For one of the M flares, HXT observer the rise phase using its gain calibration mode. This mode provides better hard X-ray energy resolution. The SXT flare observing sequence has been modified to observe with thick filters at high time resolution. OPERATIONS SXT operations went very smoothly this week with no errors. SCIENCE The seminar this week was given by T. Yokoyama on "MHD Simulations of X-ray Jets based on a Magnetic Reconnection Model." Keith Strong's 27-day movie was copied to the Sony Laser disk in D-tou. It conveniently shows the morphology of one face of the Sun in a manner that is easier to understand that normal synoptic maps. The movie covers the entire mission. It was viewed with interest by the many who dropped by D-tou this week. PERSONNEL The SXT personnel at ISAS this past week included Dick Canfield, Hugh Hudson, Greg Slater, and myself. I will return to California this weekend and on Monday, Loren Acton will take over the responsibilities of the SXT Chief Observer for the next month. Loren will be accompanied by Mark Weber, an MSU graduate student. Bob Bentley arrived last weekend to supplement the BCS team. Tohbans for Week 5 SSOC: T. Sakao, and M. Sawa KSC: T. Yoshida, and K.
