SXT Status Report 5 Feb. - 25 Feb. 1995 (Weeks 6-8) --------- Loren W. Acton 26-Feb-1995 Over the past 3 weeks solar activity has generally run at about a B level with some notable outbursts of activity and a few M flares. We completed a reasonably successful observing campaign with Roberto Falciani and Gino Smaldone at Sac Peak although NSO was hampered by clouds. Yohkoh and the SXT continue to function smoothly, no problems or anomalies have been experienced. On 20-February, despite partially incompatible timing of passes, we were able to support a campaign on the VLA by Arnold Benz and collaborators. The purpose of this campaign was multi-frequency observation of the quiet sun on the disk. Yohkoh images were used by Benz to select the region of observation. For the period of overlap the SXT data were quite good. SXT operations went very smoothly the past weeks with no errors. We were privileged to hear 2 excellent seminars: Ed Lu, recently of the University of Hawaii and now at Houston for astronaut training, spoke on "Driven Dissipative Systems and the Fundamental Nature of Solar Flares." Bill Coles, U. C. San Diego, gave a talk on measurements of the quiet solar wind from radio scintillation observations from the EISCAT system at Tromso, Norway. The Yohkoh SXT images are of importance for helping to model the relative fractions of low and high speed wind regions in interpreting these data. The U.S. SXT personnel at ISAS now comprise Weber and Acton from MSU, Linford and Shing from LPARL and Hudson from Hawaii. Linford and Shing are installing two new workstations to replace 3 older units which will be returned to the USA. This is an intricate job within a very complex system and they are doing a superb job. This week the Japanese workstation managers for the Flare machines completed system upgrades in fine style and on schedule. Week 6: Tohbans: SSOC: K. Morimoto, Y. Suematsu KSC: K. Shibasaki, T.
