SXT Status Report 29 May - 11 June 1995 (Weeks 22 & 23) --------- Nariaki Nitta 11-Jun-95 Following IAU Colloquium 153, there was little pressure to prepare for meetings. But we have started another busy period, being involved in two campaigns with Pic du Midi (to observe formation of loops) and with Kitt Peak (to observe X-ray Bright Points). The campaigns will continue until 16 June. SOLAR ACTIVITY The GOES level almost invariably stayed at A or low-B level, but unlike the previous week, there were distinct active centers, so the automatic region selection (ARS) did not pick up hot spots on the CCD. Although we did not have major flares, we observed at least some activity associated with a filament and an active region. FILAMENT HUNT There were several occasions of coordination with Mees Observatory (U of Hawai'i) to observe filament channels and eruptions. This time we observed a seemingly stable filament in good time resolution and found some structures growing in X-rays. These may have had to do with partial dissolution of the filament as observed in H-alpha. We also observed in full disk images disappearance of a filamentary structure and formation of a large loop on the limb, the latter apparently conincident with a CME that was observed at Mauna Loa. PIC DU MIDI AND XBP CAMPAIGNS We tracked AR 7877 for a couple of days. The region looked like an "anemone" type, and it was found to be growing. It did not produced major flares, but instead many small brightenings appeared. Comparisons with the high-resolution Pic du Midi data would be tempting. So far we have finished only one XBP run, in which an XBP in a coronal hole channel was observed to flare. We will continue the campaigns during the week of 12-18 June. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT instrument continues to be in fine working order. No error occurred during this time frame. CALIBRATION STATUS Thanks to Acton san's tremendous efforts during his last stay, we now identify the pointings of missing terminator (sunset) images that are used for straylight correction. Hudson san and I agreed that three offpoint commands be replaced with new ones to fill the wide gaps of the terminator database. The new commands are now in place. However, we enter a period of fewer terminator images. SEMINARS Two Yohkoh seminars were held and five people, young and old, spoke. On 31 May, there were three speakers: K. Yaji "On Non-thermal Emissions in the Hard X-ray and Microwave Ranges from Flaring Loops", M. Kundu "Non-thermal Radio Emission from X-ray Jets" and T. Kucera "Thermal/nonthermal model of electron acceleration applied to solar flare data from CGRO/BATSE and Yohkoh". On 7 June the speakers were: S. Krucker "Simultaneous Solar Observations with the VLA and Yohkoh of Type I Noise Storms" and H. Hudson "Yohkoh Detection of Mass Loss in the 24 Jan. 1992 CME - Visions of Bugles". PERSONNEL Loren Acton and Greg Slater left on 28 May and 5 June, respectively. Tom Metcalf and David Alexander are arriving shortly. Week 22 Tohbans: SSOC: K. Marubashi, A. Ohkubo KSC: T. Ishii, K.
