SXT Status Report 03 July - 09 June 1995 (Week 27) --------- David Alexander 08-Jul-95 In a week where an inspired Becker outplayed an brilliant Agassi and Sanchez-Viccario beats her compadre and last year's Wimbledon Champion (Conchita Martinez) the ISAS tennis court remains shrouded in vertical humidity. If only I could find some decent strawberries and cream! We celebrated Alphonse Sterling's birthday this week with a visit to a shabu-shabu restaurant. The "shabu-shabu" is supposed to refer to the sound made by the meat as you waft it through the boiling water to cook it. Personally, I think it refers to the gibberish spoken by the diners after their umpteenth sake. Gas attacks continue to make the news but there is no truth to the rumour that the new trade agreement between the US and Japan includes the unrestricted import of canaries. Oh, and it is still raining! SOLAR ACTIVITY The activity level remains low. We have adpated to the quieter solar conditions by carrying out long exposure observations of the diffuse corona. We have also been monitoring a large filament with the hope of seeing some coronal response to any eruption that may occur. This is being done in conjunction with the Mees Observatory, Hawaii. No data from these observations have been analysed yet SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT instrument continues to be in great working order with only one bitmap error this week. CALIBRATION STATUS The offpoint terminator program continues with many terminator images taken this week. The diligence of the SSOC tohbans helps make this a successful program. PASS CONFLICTS We lost a total of 6 passes due to conflicts with ASCA. SCIENCE The application of the pixon map reconstruction to a variety of HXT observations is providing some interesting results. Their seems to be a marked improvement over other reconstruction techniques for many events. SEMINARS There were two seminars this week at ISAS: "Solar Wind 8" - H. Hudson "Around the World for Solar Science" - K. Shibata In these seminars the speakers tried to justify their boondoggles by informing us of the highlights of the various meetings they attended. Yohkoh results continue to feature prominently in solar and solar- terrestrial meetings. PERSONNEL Tom Metcalf and family left for home after introducing us all here to the delights (and mysteries) of pixons. Hugh Hudson returned from the SolWind 8 meeting in Dana Point. Serge Koutchmy (Inst. D'Ap. Paris and NAOJ) visits ISAS this week. QUOTE OF THE WEEK Science is not a sacred cow. Science is a horse. Don't worship it. Feed it.
