SXT Status Report 24 July - 30 June 1995 (Week 30) --------- David Alexander 29-Jul-95 Well, this is my last week at ISAS before heading home to the range. It is been a long arduous visit but as always at ISAS much was learned and accomplished. Even the weather got better. Today sees a significant portion of the local residents visit ISAS for the open house. This is a day when ISAS opens its doors to the public and shows them what they are getting for their tax money. Many of the Yohkoh students have put a lot of work into this day and we hope their efforts were appreciate by the visitors. Yohkoh yet again appeared on Japanese TV along with an interview with Enome-san and Sakurai-san. Yohkoh continues to have a broad appeal to the public at large. SOLAR ACTIVITY The activity level remains low. Not much doing on the campaign or special observations front. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS No problems with the SXT this week. CALIBRATION STATUS The offpoint terminator program continues. PASS CONFLICTS We lost a total of 7 passes due to conflicts with ASCA. NEW CAMPAIGN Koutchmy-san and Hara-san have proposed a campaign to "Identify and deduce relevant parameters of small scale features seen at high temperature in polar regions at time when polar faculae are still active." This proposal was accepted by the WOM. SCIENCE A early draft of the pixon paper by Tom Metcalf, Hugh Hudson and co-authors shows an HXT for the Feb 21 1992 event the SXT observations of which have been extensively studied by Tsuneta-san. This is a breakthrough for the pixon method since the standard MEM reconstruction could not deal with the low hard X-ray count rates in this event. It is also to interesting to note that at first glance the HXT LO channel sources found by the pixon approach matches with the locations of the high temperature regions detected by SXT. SEMINARS Yohkoh seminars have stopped for the interim. Stay tuned! PERSONNEL Len Culhane visits ISAS for 1 week to work with Hugh Hudson on a Yohkoh review. Mark Weber arrived Thursday and immediately headed off to Osaka for the weekend. Smart move, I think. Mark takes over as Chief Observer this week. David Alexander returns to the wild and woolly west on Aug 2. QUOTE OF THE WEEK "Some things have to be believed to be seen."
