SXT Status Report 7 August - 13 August 1995 (Week 32) --------- Mark Weber 14-Aug-95 To my mind, temperatures have cooled ever so slightly this past week, perhaps due to cloud cover. All of that rain that Alexander made a hallmark of his reports must have followed him back to Montana. I'm sure the people there will thank him. . . SOLAR ACTIVITY Activity levels have remained low, to no one's great surprise. Active regions AR7894, 7895, and 7896 passed to the west limb, while only one significant region has appeared at the east limb now at the end of Week 32. The vast area of the disc between these shows a quiet corona which is much less discernable by the SXT (i.e., lower emission of X-rays) than at more active times. According to GOES data, solar activity has breached the B-level only a few times this week. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS No problems with the SXT this week. In fact, there have not even been minor SXT Errors during KSC operations since June! CALIBRATION STATUS The offpoint terminator program continues, theoretically. Practically speaking, no opportunities arose this week. PASS CONFLICTS We lost a total of five (5) passes due to conflicts with ASCA. CAMPAIGNS The only campaign carried on in Week 32 was Filament Observation with Hawaii. Following is the status of impending, or on-hold, campaigns. - FILAMENT OBSERVATIONS Contrary to last week's plan, some filament observations were carried out in Week 32. Specifically, SXT Table [950810 P2 ARS0 FILAMENT] was uploaded at (10-Aug-95 13:35) and "downloaded" ("unloaded"?) at (11-Aug-95 13:54). Times in UT. The filament it was set to observe (at roughly S15 W38) erupted only an hour or so before the Table went into effect. In accordance with the general depression now of solar activity, the filament eruption was "weak". In soft X-rays, one can see some restructuring of the coronal fields, but an event of such magnitude would have gone unnoticed a couple of years ago. - SPARTAN Spartan 201-03 launch delayed until "no earlier than mid-August". Our observing plan will change depending on exact launch date. - POLAR RAY CAMPAIGN The Yohkoh team has accepted a campaign proposal from Koutchmy-san Hara-san to "Identify and deduce relevant parameters of small scale features seen at high temperature in polar regions at time when polar faculae are still active." The dates of this campaign will be determined by the proposers and the SXT Chief Observer. SEMINARS Yohkoh seminar fans must continue to wait until the lecture series begins once more. PERSONNEL No changes. OPERATIONS NOTE: It was decided at the Weekly Operations Meeting for Week 32 that the WOM for Week 33 (Mon. 14, Aug.) would be skipped. The next WOM will be held Mon. 21, August. Week 32 Tohban: SSOC: Kosugi and Akita KSC: Watanabe and Masuda SXT Chief Observer: M. Weber SXT Systems and Data Engineer: Conspicuously none again.
