SXT Status Report 18 March 1996 - 31 March 1996 (Weeks 12 - 13) ----------- Serge Savy 1-Apr-96 SXT operations have been straightforward. There have been no campaigns in the last two weeks. SOLAR ACTIVITY The Sun has been mostly quiet, with only three small active regions (7952, 7953, 7954) observed. AR7953 produced several B class events on 22-Mar-96. There was a C-class flare on 23 March, at 19:30 UT. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS The SXT instrument has continued to work well. There were no significant SXT errors. In week 12 a 3-day shutdown of the ISAS operations mainframe computer took place without any problems. SXT CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES The main effort for SXT calibration continues to be the "terminator" program, whereby correction images are obtained by acquiring pictures when the X-ray sun has set but the visible sun is unaffected by atmospheric absorption. These images still show the scattered optical light, and we have found that excellent corrections for this effect can be made by proper use of the terminator data. We continue to work on ways of getting such correction images efficiently and in the right filters. In particular, to cover the use of the Mg filter in the SoHO campaign, we have been acquiring additional Mg terminator images. PASS CONFLICTS Pass conflicts with ASCA: Week 12: 5 KSC pass conflicts. Week 13: 7 KSC pass conflicts. CAMPAIGNS No campaigns in weeks 12 and 13. SCIENCE The last two weeks have been very quiet with most people away at the Bath meeting on reconnection in week 12, and then the ASJ meeting immediately afterwards. F. Farnik (Ondrejov) arrived on 28th March for a two month stay at ISAS. He will be studying flares with HXT and SXT data. SEMINARS No seminars in weeks 12 and 13. PERSONNEL At the time of the Bath meeting there was no SXT Chief Observer at ISAS. Thanks go to M. Shimojo, T. Yoshida, Y. Nakagawa, and M. Takahashi for looking after SXT during that week (12). Savy and Hudson returned to ISAS in week 13. Week 12 Tohbans: SSOC: T. Yoshida KSC: Y. Nakagawa, M.
