SXT Status Report 12 May 1997 to 2 June 1997 (Weeks 20-22) S. Savy, H. Hudson, M. Weber SUMMARY SXT continued to operate well. Solar activity was moderate. SOLAR ACTIVITY An M flare and half a dozen C flares occurred. The GOES background level ranged above B for days at a time, so this was one of the more active intervals we have experienced recently. Rumor has it that the M flare of May 21 (remember SMM?) produced yet another Moreton wave in the SOHO/EIT observations. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT continues to perform well technically. SXT CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES A second UV flood experiment was done in a continuing effort to understand the "dark pixel" phenomenon. Otherwise, no particular concerns arose. A normal point adjustment was carried out on May 14 to help make a better concentration of the thin Al terminator images. PASS CONFLICTS Week 20: Six passes were cancelled for Akebono. Week 21: Eight passes were canceled (five for Akebono, three for Haruka). Week 22: Eleven passes were canceled (nine for Haruka, two for Akebono). CAMPAIGNS A major series of joint observations took place at the end of May. These were coordinated from the SOHO center in Paris (MEDOC) by Brigitte Schmieder. SXT also observed, but with no special setup, during the EUV rocket flight of Woods and Hassler. We continue trying to follow SOHO planning, especially CDS targets. For Yohkoh target planning, the SXT weekly observing plan is available on the Web at http://www.space.lockheed.com/SXT/html2/First_Light.html or with "finger campaign@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp | more" . See http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/operations/targets/today" for SoHO target planning. VISITORS AND PERSONNEL Hugh Hudson was absent for almost two weeks for AGU. Mark Weber arrived, as did Lee McDonald from the BCS group at MSSL. Len Culhane was also absent for a week in the U.K.; Joe Khan and Serge Savy returned from the filament meeting at Aussois. Greg Slater returned in time for the rainy season. SEMINARS There was a Yohkoh seminar on May 14: H. Hudson (SPRC ) "Coronal Mass Ejections, part I" J. Khan (MSSL) "Filamentary Impressions of France" Hudson is doing a tutorial on CMEs that will go on whenever there is room in the seminar schedule. We're all quite amazed at how much wonderful observational material there is on CMEs during solar minimum. TOHBANS Tohbans for Week 20: SSOC : Hara, Shinohara KSC : Okubo, Hashizume SXT_CO: H.
