SXT Status Report 2 June 1997 to 16 June 1997 (Weeks 23-24) H. Hudson, S. Savy, M. Weber SUMMARY SXT continued to operate well. Solar activity was moderate but not zero. SOLAR ACTIVITY The Sun is not so lopsided as it was in 1996, judging from the last rotation. There are currently only new-cycle regions on the disk. During the reporting period there were only B-classs flares, and not too many of them, but of course the movie looks as beautiful as ever. The largest sunspot area reported was 160 millionths. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT continues to perform well technically. On the database side, a memorable event occurred: thanks to the diligence of Seko_san and Slater_san, the final reformatting came up to within one week of real time. This is no doubt a record! SXT CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES We continued to try to sharpen up the Yohkoh pointing in an effort to improve the stray-light database. PASS CONFLICTS Week 22: Twelve passes were cancelled (nine for Akebono, three for Haruka). Week 23: Six passes were cancelled for Haruka CAMPAIGNS There were no formal campaigns during this interval, not counting the end of the Pic du Midi campaign. Weber filed a report concluding the Yohkoh scheduling during the campaign interval, after finding software that generates the report directly. This software will be run again when the final reformatted data are available. SXT also followed SOHO target pointing where possible, especially the CDS field of view. Over the weekend of 14-15 June, we are trying out Q-resolution only (FFI's) to see if the factor-of-four improvement in cadence will help with Moreton wave detection. If this looks OK, we elaborate on this scheme to emphasize Q resolution, but to obtain enough H resolution full-Sun images for other purposes. For Yohkoh target planning, the SXT weekly observing plan is available on the Web at http://www.space.lockheed.com/SXT/html2/First_Light.html or with "finger campaign@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp | more" . See http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/operations/targets/today" for SoHO target planning. VISITORS AND PERSONNEL No personnel changes among SXT personnel; Lee McDonald (BCS) returned to the U.K. but will be back soon. SEMINARS There were several Yohkoh seminars: (June 5) L. McDonald (MSSL): "Non-thermal energy deposition in the chromosphere and the accompanying soft X-ray flare emission" (June 5) H. Hudson (SPRC): "Coronal Mass Ejections, part II: AGU report" (June 12) S. Savy (LMPARL): "Chromospheric eVAPORATION observed with Yohkoh" It was a good fortnight for the Neupert effect.
