SXT Status Report June 12 - June 26, 2000 (Weeks 25-26) B. Handy SUMMARY Activity was moderate, with one X-class flare and a handful of M-class flares. Yohkoh offpointed to observe the Crab Nebula during this reporting period. SXT has had no technical problems. SOLAR ACTIVITY Solar activity has been variable, with the baseline remaining relatively constant over the two week interval but flaring activity ranging from flatline to enthusiastic. NOAA Regions #9046 and #9042 have been quite productive in the last week. Several of these flares were co-observed by TRACE. One interesting flare during this period occurred during the Yohkoh offpoint to observe the Crab Nebula. This was observed by HXT, but unfortunately BCS was not collecting data at this time. OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS The only official campaign during this period was the HXT observation of the Crab Nebula during the period 14-June-00 10:17 -- 15-June-00 08:44, coordinated by K. Makishima. The spacecraft was offpointed 1.2 degrees from sun center and SXT was turned off during this period. SXT emerged from the offpoint with no problems, and the Crab team is enthusiastically reducing data. Two Science Nuggets have thus far been written on the topic, and we anticipate at least one more when the Crab team manages to create an image (and perhaps one prior to that when we convincingly extract a Crab signal from the noise). Please see our webpages for more details about campaigns past and future: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS AND CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES Special operations were carried out on June 14-15 for the Crab observation. SXT was turned off during this time period. SCIENCE Science Nuggets 16-Jun-00: "'Moving' emission lines and a BCS discovery" In a rare instance, BCS emerged to the fore during the offpoint to observe the Crab Nebula. The nature of the BCS instrument is that by changing the angle of incidence on the crystals in BCS, it's possible to observe different lines. This nugget reports on a new observation of the Si XV line. 23-Jun-00: "Yohkoh observes the Crab Nebula" In a celebration of stellar observations with a solar observatory, this nugget explores some of the history of observations of the Crab and gives a quick look at the data that emerged from the offpoint. The full list of nuggets is kept on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html , and the current week's nugget also normally resides on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html .
