SXT Status Report June 27 - July 9, 2000 (Weeks 27-28) B. Handy, H. Hudson SUMMARY Activity has been feeble, considering when we are, with no X-class flares. SXT has had no technical problems. SOLAR ACTIVITY At the time of writing the background GOES level is rather high (above C) reflecting the presence of numerous small active regions. But, all week long, these regions have diligently avoided making big flares. OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS SXT supported a VLA program aimed at charaterizing the differential emission-measure distribution. We received e-mail from Angelos Vourlidas claiming success - let's see how much overlapping data we wound up with! Please see our webpages for more details about campaigns past and future: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS AND CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES No unusual acivities took place during the reporting interval. TELEMETRY DOWNLINKS The format of the listing below has been changed to reflect the disappearance of Santiago. The 34-m antenna at Kagoshima is now in full use (for downlink only) and the statistics reflect that. We can now pretty reliably count on 5x6 weekday passes, and one Sunday pass each week. SCIENCE Science Nuggets 23-Jun-00: "Yohkoh observes the Crab Nebula" In a celebration of stellar observations with a solar observatory, this nugget explores some of the history of observations of the Crab and gives a quick look at the data that emerged from the offpoint. 30-Jun-00: "Flare catalog" N. V. Nitta has made a nice catalog that merges the observing logs of Yohkoh and TRACE. Now at a glance one can see whether there's overlap - it is all too infrequent, given the TRACE field-of-view restrictions and the sad fact that there are quiet-Sun observations too. But the catalog of overlaps is already large. 7-Jul-00: "Spiny arcades" Ruminations about spiny arcades, which Yohkoh discovered and which led to the first observations of one form of coronal dimming, and of supra-arcade downflows. Another nice one happened on June 2, 2000 prior to the three X-class flares in June, and from the same region. The full list of nuggets is kept on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html , and the current week's nugget also normally resides on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html .
