SXT Status Report August 22 - September 3, 2000 (Weeks 35-36) L. Fletcher, H. Hudson SUMMARY Activity remained astonishingly low, only one M-class flare (but well-observed and quite interesting). SXT continued to function well, and SXT supported Max Millennium campaign #10 (flares, unfortunately). SOLAR ACTIVITY The solar activity was depressingly low in the sense of flare activity, although the corona continues to show us nice things. The August 25 event, just at the end of the Max Millennium campaign #10, turned out to be quite wonderful - coronal oscillations, ejecta, "knottiness", Type IV. OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS Yohkoh and SXT supported Max Millennium Campaign #10. Please see our webpages for more details about campaigns past and future: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS AND CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES Nothing to report here. SCIENCE Observing sequences: We have been experimenting again with the FFIs. After the experiment with "rapid" low-resolution images, we are now generating "not-so-rapid" medium-resolution images. The technique is simply to take fewer of the short-exposure images used for SFD composite images. This results in many more opportunities for standard long-exposure images, with time resolution approaching two minutes. It appears to make a real difference in the recognizability of faint dynamic features in the corona, and we are of course still hoping that we'll catch some Type II burst wave fronts somehow. This approach seems better than the low-resolution approach, even though the time resolution is diminished. For flare mode, we have tweaked and are continuing the 2x2 experiment. It worked quite well on the Aug. 25 event (see the nugget for Sep. 1). Seminars: Aug. 24: "Variation of X-ray Bright Point Number over the Solar Cycle" (H. Hara, NAO) Aug. 31: "Sounding the Temperature Minimum in Sunspots" (K. Shibasaki, Nobeyama) Science nuggets: 25-Aug-00: "Cleaving like a guillotine" - maybe not a very good title, but meant to emphasize the great regularity of the footpoints in the beautiful arcade of the July 14, 2000, X-class flare. 1-Sep-00: "Lucky observations of a limb flare" - some of the features of the flare of August 25, spectacularly well observed. There is also a TRACE "Picture of the Day" Web review, since this event showed rare coronal oscillations following the flare ejection. The full list of nuggets is kept on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html and the current week's nugget also normally resides on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html PERSONNEL No changes.
