SXT Status Report October 23 - November 05, 2000 (Weeks 44-45) A. Takeda, D. McKenzie SUMMARY Solar activity started low (background below GOES C), increased to a climax on 29-Oct (M4.4), then subsided for the remainder of the reporting period. There were 14 flares of at least C5 magnitude. OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS JOP 104 ended on 27-Oct; SXT contribution to this campaign was small, due to the choice of faint targets during active periods. Please see our webpages for more details about campaigns past and future: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS AND CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES Instrument status is good, with no new problems to report. Pointing and roll remained stable. The z-axis drift rate is being closely monitored, with ~daily "STT MAP" operation. Normal pointing was updated on 27-Oct-00. TELEMETRY DOWNLINKS Week Wallops Santiago Goldstone Canberra Madrid NASA Japan 44 28 1 5 0 10 44 35 45 24 14 3 0 12 53 28 Some data were lost at Madrid passes due to inability to lock on signal; Madrid operator claimed low s/c signal. These appear to be during low-elevation passes (< 10 degrees), so the threshold for accepting downlink passes over Madrid may need to be re-raised to 10 degrees. Kagoshima should average 6*5+2 = 32, so we're now doing pretty well on this score. OBSERVING SEQUENCES: The flare sequence tables continue with the long/short half/full overexposed/normal sequences that we hope will lead to a breakthrough in our ability to do SXT scattered-light corrections and make temperature maps in faint regions near bright ones. We have modified our "rapid" movie sequences at half resolution - sets of four deep exposures with 5" pixels at two-minute intervals. We increased the frequency of this part in FFI/QT/H sequence, and we thereby decrease the frequency of super-long exposure images which were recently too much saturated. A permutation of this setup will probably be used in the MEOC campaign. SEMINARS: In week 45, the seminar was given by V. Rusin and M. Minarovjech of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The topics were solar research in the Slovak Republic and coronal variations on time scales of minutes to decades. SCIENCE: Nugget of 27-Oct-00 reviews the pointing system of Yohkoh, giving good explanation for the bad pointing which Yohkoh underwent in week 42. Nugget of 3-Nov-00 describes cusp-shaped loops, and examines an apparent "cusp-filling" event from 19-OCT-00. The full list of nuggets is kept on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html and the current week's nugget also normally resides on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html PERSONNEL: No changes.
