SXT Status Report November 27 through December 10, 2000 (Weeks 49-50) H. Hudson, G. Slater, A. Takeda, J. Bartus SOLAR ACTIVITY Solar activity has been low, after the notable splurge of X-class flares in the late November. The GOES background remained around/under the C-level. During week 50, the distinct coronal-hole channel noted in the science nugget http://solar.physics.montana.edu/nuggets/2000/001020/001020.html made its nth disk passage and excited much attention from observers. OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS The CDS campaign (velocity distribution in ARs) ran during 4-8 December in parallel with the MEOC campaign (waves). Because of target selection we could not get much PFI data for the former. Please see our webpages for more details about campaigns past and future: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS AND CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES Instrument status is good, with no new problems to report. Pointing and roll remained stable. Daily "STT MAP" operation continues in order to monitored the z-axis drift rate. SXT normal pointing was updated on 8-Dec (001208-1445). It was the third trial in week 50, since the trials on 6 and 7 Dec. did not work effectively. It turned out that the OG archive on WS had not been updated in the previous normal pointing on 9-Nov. Now the archive has been updated correctly and the pointing has returned to normal. OBSERVING SEQUENCES: The flare sequence tables continue with the long/short half/full overexposed/normal sequences that we hope will lead to a breakthrough in our ability to do SXT scattered-light corrections and make temperature maps in faint regions near bright ones. Most of the FFI observations during this interval were done with the modified "rapid" scheme, which produces sets of four long-exposure AlMg movies. We hope that these eight-minute glimpses will give us good views of global waves. SEMINARS: No seminar was held these week. A Solar-B science meeting was held near ISAS in week 50. SCIENCE NUGGETS: December 1: "The CCD nitty-gritty ditty" - a light review of how CCDs work. The SXT CCD, incidentally, has worked for almost a decade now! December 8: "Birds of a feather - 'homology'" - a discussion of the nearly homologous X-class flares of November. How these flares can be so similar to one another might pose a theoretical problem. The full list of nuggets is kept on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html and the current week's nugget also normally resides on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html PERSONNEL: H. Hudson returned and departed for AGU meeting and for Christmas; Janos Bartus arrived and started working as a software expert. TOHBANS (spacecraft operators) Tohbans for week 49 SSOC: K. Kobayaki, T.
