SXT Status Report December 11, through December 29, 2000 (Weeks 51-53) H. Hudson, A. Takeda SOLAR ACTIVITY Solar activity has been curiously low during these two weeks plus; only four M flares, but appreciable time with the GOES background flux level above C. As we went into our long New Year's holiday, of course, a major sunspot group (NOAA 9289, area = 760) made its appearance. OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS We carried out no cooperative observing programs during this interval, but have a target-of-opportunity (TOO) search for sigmoid structures under way since Dec. 9. Please see our webpages for more details about campaigns past and future: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS AND CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES Instrument status is good, with no new problems to report. Pointing and roll remained stable, except for a normal Canopus loss beginning on about Dec. 18. TELEMETRY DOWNLINKS Week Wallops Santiago Goldstone Canberra Madrid NASA Japan 51 30 2 0 0 11 43 31 52 28 7 4 0 11 50 36 53 20 7 6 0 6 39 27 Kagoshima should average 6*5+2 = 32, so we are doing very well indeed. NASA should be doing 7*6 = 42, and the record is also exemplary. Of course week 53 is odd at KSC because of the KSC holiday. Thank you, NASA, for week 52 - don't you celebrate Christmas at all? Most of the FFI observations during this interval were done with the modified "rapid" scheme, which produces sets of four long-exposure AlMg movies. We hope that these eight-minute glimpses will give us good views of global waves. Maybe now we've seen some first fruits - please check out the science nugget http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/001229.html SEMINARS: No seminar was held during this interval. SCIENCE NUGGETS: 29-Dec-00: Downflows seen in whole-Sun images The SFDs show supra-arcade funny business. Our new rapid SFD sequences may help us to see these, since flare mode is not always on. 22-Dec-00: Big flares associated with halo CMEs An awesome nugget, with two fundamentally important conclusions - impulsive flares really do correlate with halo CMEs, and homology is quite confusing. 15-Dec-00: "It is a gorgeous coronal hole" Indeed. Stretching from north to south, and eliciting e-mail comments from around the world.
