SXT Status Report 9 - 21 April, 2001 (Weeks 15-16) A. Takeda, H. Hudson SOLAR ACTIVITY After the tremendous activity that appeared in AR 9393, including the X20 flare, AR 9415 took over the vigorous activity during its disk passage, even until a few days after it set behind the west limb. The region produced two more X-class flares during these weeks, and one of them occurred on 15th was an X14 event in the GOES classification. Moreover, the flare observed on 18th was acompanied by a strong proton event. Although the soft X-ray flux was so small (C2.2 with GOES) that SXT failed to point at the flare kernel, we could get good series of HXT images. One can see a quick report on this event in the recent science nugget as below. OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS We continued to be on the alert for sigmoids as Target Of Oportunity. Please see our webpages for more details about campaigns past and future: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS AND CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES No new problem has been reported. Yohkoh safely went through the Canopus eclipse period (14-19 Apr). OBSERVING SEQUENCES: We have installed a special flare table for detecting global waves. To keep high time cadence with a 2x2 FOV, the sequence is simplified as follows. The table worked properly and yielded a 280-sec cadence of nearly whole-sun images in QT/H mode, as you can find in the address : http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/5by7_PFI.gif. SCIENCE NUGGETS: 13-Apr-01: "Beautiful coverage of a major flare", deals with the X2.0 of April 12, for which our coverage was great. One interesting feature of this flare was a "tilting cusp" - early on it pointed SW, later on NW. 20-Apr-01: "A major event after the region rotated off the west limb" presents a quick report of the event we met with on 18th. One interest thing to report is that the EIT dimming associated with the flare corresponds to the SXT brightening! In addition HXT saw a remarkable rapid ejection in hard X-rays.
