Description:
Eight rotations of the Sun with the longitude of NOAA active region 7978
(the July 7 image) approximately at the center. The sunspot area grew
very rapidly after July 7, reaching 400 millionths by July 10. But even
before this eruption, the same longitude had supported an active region
that was physically large. This region made an X-class flare on July 9
and apparently helped to launch several CMEs; the aftereffects of one
of them can be seen in the September 26 image.
