Active regions from the new solar cycle as seen by Yohkoh in soft X-rays (above) and by the Kitt Peak Solar Observatory magnetograph (below). Note the reversed magnetic polarity for the two new-cycle regions in the north, compared with the old-cycle region in the west (to the right). At the east limb one can see another old-cycle activity complex about to rotate around the limb onto the disk. HSH 27-Mar-97
