                 CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 10 
                        1-Mar-98 to 7-Mar-98


SOLAR ACTIVITY

Solar activity was higher this week, with numerous C-class flares
mainly from AR 8171 (29 of them by 6-Mar 12:31) and no M or X events.
Hmmm. The other interesting item (see this week's nugget) was the
sunspot group appearing at N48 (!), thanks to Pat McIntosh for alerting
us to this.

SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS

The instruments are performing well.  Careful planning helped the Yohkoh
systems to survive another eclipse.  A Yohkoh pointing update (about
ten arc sec) moved the Sun back into a good configuration for terminator
correction images.

This week's "science nugget" deals with the high-latitude region but
also contains links to the full-Sun movies from the eclipse of Feb. 26.

CAMPAIGNS

There was a bit of a scare about the telemetry from the third (best)
eclipse episode. A Wallops operations error put a gap in the data right
at the wrong moment. Luckily we had dumped that particular bit twice,
and the second dump was OK. So - no problem.

PERSONNEL

D. McKenzie returned to Montana on Thursday, 5-Mar.

SEMINAR

There was no seminar during this week.

SXT Chief Observer: Hudson 

There are no special campaigns this week, but we may try jet-hunting
or filament-chasing as usual. Unfortunately there are many conflicts
in KSC usage this week, so we have little flexibility. The VLA (Rob
Willson) is observing over the weekend, but we don't need a special
setup because it is whole-Sun long wavelengths.

Note that UT days begin again to differ from JST days, so the dates
look a little odd.  Note that this plan is subject to change.

Continuing requests:

SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official
five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to
other satellites.  That way we can keep the numbering straight in the
Yohkoh software system.

SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- 
pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer
for terminator off-pointing information.

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer.
