                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 10
                       27-Feb-00 through 05-Mar-00 


GENERAL 

Solar activity hinted at an increase this week, and there was a (minimal)
X-class flare. 

SXT TECHNICAL 

SXT functioned properly, no new problems to report.  We carried out
two redefinitions of Yohkoh normal pointing, one inadvertently putting
us back at the old standard location for two days. There were several
Y2K bugs associated with this, and we hope we've seen the last of them.

The science nugget this week summarizes the X-flare observations.
It is quite amazingly impulsive and Neupert-like. The decay is
exceptionally fast, in spite of strong ejectivity, and the post-flare
loops really shrunk to a one-pixel unresolved point at GOES maximum.

No coordinated campaigns have been scheduled for this week.

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
