May 15, 2000 H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 21 8-May through 14-May-00 GENERAL Yohkoh finished supporting JOP122 (network flares). As soon as this was done, activity began to rise from its amazingly low level last weekend, to a substantial level this weekend. There were major flares from several regions. Truly the Sun can be lopsided. SXT TECHNICAL SXT functioned properly. As a result of the campaign operation, however, there was an unwanted overexposure and the blemish region at the W limb became worse. It appears to be recovering now. SXT SCIENTIFIC We ran "rapid run" SFDs for three days this week. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/000512.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget follows up on the May 5 event mentioned last week. The data are quite nice and appear to show a heated filament flying up from far behind the limb - for us, just barely caught in the QR field, but for EIT clearly seen in one full-Sun frame. CAMPAIGNS There are no scheduled campaigns. We will keep our eyes open for targets of opportunity. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Brian Handy departed, and returned. SEMINARS Last week: none. T. Sakurai gave the Friday talk at NAO, in which he presented his astounding geophysics result regarding sky-brightness fluctuation on the 11-year cycle. This week: TBD. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 21 (14-May-00 - 20-May-00) Campaigns: None scheduled at present. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 15-MAY-00 03:55 4 000514 P4 DKCAL* Tuesday AM 15-MAY-00 22:58 1 000515 P1 DIFF* Tuesday PM 16-MAY-00 04:04 4 000515 P4 STD* Wednesday AM 17-MAY-00 02:31 3 000516 P3 STD* Thursday AM 18-MAY-00 00:58 3 000517 P3 STD* Friday AM 18-MAY-00 23:25 2 000518 P2 STD Saturday AM 20-MAY-00 01:17 4 000519 P4 STD* (* signifies that the UT and JST dates don't match on pass 1) Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
