SXT Status Report September 25, 2001 - October 7, 2001 (Weeks 39-40) L. Fletcher, H. Hudson, A. Takeda SOLAR ACTIVITY Solar activity decayed substantially over these two weeks, with the GOES background returning below the C level. Again there were numerous M-class flares (17) without X-class flares; again, there were numerous active regions (as many as 17 numbered NOAA regions on 5 October). Thus the M/X ratio is 61 for September-October, dropping to 42 if one goes back to the next earlier X-class flare of August 25. OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS Yohkoh supported observations guided by Brigitte Schmieder, "Onset of Flaring Activity and Coronal Mass Ejections", but only minimally because of the timing of the uplinks. Please see our webpages for details about campaigns past and future: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS AND CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES Yohkoh experienced a normal Canopus loss at the end of this period, and the recovery was made with no problems. We now have a new Web interface (thanks to J. Bartus) for quick reformatting, so that we can check out current events more readily. This has been quite helpful in nugget preparation already. We have also used it to try to track down fine-scale telemetry errors detected in the Wallops contacts Sep. 12-14. It may be that some of these are creeping in via the re-transmission of the data; in any case they result in image gaps but normal-looking block or frame counts. With the new rapid reformatting, we can in principle do the "end-to-end" testing of any given telemetry dump right away, ie feeding it to the reformatter and looking in detail at the data. OBSERVING SEQUENCES: There were no changes in the standard observing sequences. SCIENCE NUGGETS: October 5: "Spiny arcades repeat" describes nearly-homologous behavior of large coronal structures, including a rather spectacular spiny arcade exhibiting the SAD phenomenon quite clearly. September 28: "Czech hard X-rays fit beautifully" reports on the September 24 X-class flare, for which the Czech spectrometer data exactly filled the interval missed by Yohkoh - thus roundly defeating Murphy's Law. This flare, the unique X-class flare since August 25, produced hard X-ray emission lasting for over an hour and had an extremely interesting early development. The full list of recent nuggets is kept on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html and the current week's nugget also normally resides on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html For the complete nugget archive, see one of the following sites. http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html SEMINARS: No seminars, but we've begun to have informal discussions around tea or coffee - Boris Somov explaining reconnection to the agnostics.
