A challenging e-mail message from the dual Mikes (Kaiser and Reiner) of the WIND/WAVES experiment: "Mike Reiner and I have decided to add yet another strange event to the type II and IV list -- again it appears to be WAVES-only -- nothing else reported. The event may be a type IV burst and can be viewed on the Web page. It is on April 27 between 14:40 and 14:55 UT and covers the band from 5 to 14 MHz. You'll see that all through this interval (and for several days on either side), there is a type III storm in progress -- one of the most intense we've seen with WAVES. Type III storms are usually associated with large helmet sructures that remain stable or slowly expand over a long period of time (>1 rotation) and spew off uncountable numbers of band-limited (i.e. upper and lower frequency 'cutoffs') type III bursts. Also on the same picture, is a highly structured type III burst at about 14:20 that MIGHT even have a U burst embedded in it, which would be consistent with the helmet structure. Very busy and confused period. We wish someone else had observed something at the same time. Mikes K & R" Here, of course, the challenge is in the "we wish someone else" plea... Luckily, this group maintains nice Web pages with interesting examples of their data: http://www-lep.gsfc.nasa.gov/waves/waves.html
