A coronal hole is technically a region of the corona that is dark, as is the region surrounded by the "halo" in this image. Such a region has a largely unipolar magnetic field. Skylab data confirmed that the high-speed solar wind streams originate in coronal holes. Yohkoh has shown that these apparently-empty volumes may, unexpectedly, have large, faint magnetic loops in them.
