Polar Plumes

The Yohkoh observations show that one can see polar plumes in coronal X-ray emission. This is an important clue to their physical nature, a hot research topic. Because these polar regions create the solar wind which fills the entire space between the Sun and the Earth, the understanding of the "plume" structure has a high priority for explaining solar influences on the Earth.
