Coronal Streamer

This image shows how a coronal streamer starts near the surface of the Sun. The large-scale magnetic fields form an arcade, above which is a cusp resulting from the juncture of oppositely-directed fields. This cusp implies the existence of coronal electric currents, which force the field to reverse rapidly; such a "current sheet" may be the source of much of the instability and explosive nature of the Sun's magnetized atmosphere.
